Allium unifolium goes by common names American Garlic, or One-Leaved Onion. Despite its name, it usually has 2-3 flat leaves up to 50 cm long. It is a North American species of wild onion. It is native to the coastal mountain ranges of California, Oregon, and Baja California, and is grown in other areas of North America and hardy in zones 5 and up.
The plants form bulbs that are egg-shaped, up to 2 cm long, often formed at the end of rhizomes spreading out from the parent plant. The flowers grow up to 30-80 cm tall, and up to 15 mm across, usually pink but occasionally white, with yellow or purple anthers .
This plant has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
