Aquilegia atrata, the dark columbine, is native to the Alps and Apennine Mountains. It has dark flowers, a deep wine or purple colour, which bloom in spring and summer. It is smaller than the similar, but more widespread species Aquilegia vulgaris. The plants are protected in many areas.

Columbine plants are easy to grow, and are tolerant to many soils, including poor and dry locations. They will grow in sun or shade. Flowers are held well above the foliage, on strong stems.
