Cymbopogon citratus, commonly known as lemon grass, has foliage that emits a strong lemony fragrance. Lemongrass is usually grown as an annual, and is winter hardy to USDA Zones 10-11 where it is evergreen (roots may be hardy to Zone 8b). It is easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soils in full sun. Tolerates light shade, but prefers full sun. Seed is difficult to obtain. Plant outside in spring after last frost date. Smaller container plants can be overwintered indoors in bright light locations.
Cymbopogon citratus contain simple, bluish-green leaves with entire margins and are linear in shape. The blades tend to be 18-36 inches long.
