This hardy perennial is native to North America, though mostly in the Western portions, it has been found as far East as the Thousand Islands region of Ontario. Though the larger spines are easy to spot, they also have small spines that are easy to overlook if collecting the fruits. Should be handled with care. Grows well from seed and can be multiplied by cutting segments off and spreading them out. Very drought tolerant, great addition for the rock garden. Showy yellow flowers, sometimes reddish on the exterior, bloom during the summer months.
