Rheum nobile <br>SAKKIM RHUBARB
Rheum nobile, the Sikkim rhubarb or noble rhubarb, is a giant plant native to the Himalayas. It is an extraordinary rhubarb (genus Rheum) at 1–2m (3'4"-6'8") tall, towering above the other shrubs and low herbs in its habitat, and it is visible across valleys from several kilometres away.
R. nobile is often called a glasshouse plant because of its outer translucent bracts which pass visible light, creating a greenhouse effect, while blocking ultraviolet radiation. It also provides a safe haven for its pollinators against wind and night chill. The root is often 1–2 m (3'4"–6'8") long and as thick as an arm.
Despite false claims that it only blooms once every 400 years in the Himalayas, it blooms annually in June and July. The flowers are generally hidden under the bracts (flaps) and can be seen by lifting the bracts. Flowers begin green, turn pink, and then dark red.
A very unique plant for collectors, and garden enthusiasts!
